As a category, Asakusa kimono rental is good value and hard to get badly wrong. Choose by return time, hair and location; wargo is the safest all-round pick, YAE the most inclusive.

Six chains run a large share of the kimono rental counters you'll see advertised around Kaminarimon. VASARA and Kimono Miyabi have three Asakusa stores each, Aiwafuku two, and wargo, YAE and Rikawafuku one apiece. They all sell roughly the same thing: you arrive empty-handed, choose a kimono and obi, get dressed (and usually get your hair done), and return everything by late afternoon. How we judged them
Price matters less than you'd think, because the standard plans sit within a few thousand yen of each other. What changes your day:
- Return time. A 17:00 deadline and an 18:00 deadline are very different afternoons.
- Hair. Included, or an extra ¥550 or more?
- Location. Up to 8 minutes' walk from the station, or 20 seconds from the gate?
- Sizes. Published limits beat vague promises.
- Fine print. Luggage fees, late fees, next-day return and cancellation.
wargo
One Asakusa store, on the 4th floor of the Rakutenchi Asakusa Building at 2-6-7 Asakusa (UNIQLO is on the ground floor), about five minutes' walk from Senso-ji. It is run by Compass Corp. (the brand was earlier run by a company called Wagokoro); wargo also has Tokyo stores in Ginza and Azabu-Juban. Hours are 10:00–18:00, last dressing 17:30, return by 18:00, the latest standard deadline among these six. The standard kimono is ¥3,300 prepaid online, including hair styling (¥4,400 in store). Men's plans also start at ¥3,300, couples at ¥7,700 per pair. The published size ranges are the most useful we found: women about 150–175 cm, men about 165–200 cm, footwear up to about 26.5 cm for women and 29.5 cm for men. Extras are sensible: ¥330 damage cover, next-day return (by 15:00) for ¥1,100, or return by convenience-store courier for ¥2,750. Dressing takes 45–90 minutes. Walk-ins are welcome and luggage storage is offered. Cancellation is free until two days before, then 100%.
Verdict — daikichi. The best all-round pick: lowest online price with hair, latest return, clearest sizing.
VASARA
Three Asakusa stores, all run by VASARA Holdings (founded 2016, based in Akihabara, and also a franchisor): the Main Store at 1-1-11 Asakusa, right outside Ginza Line Exit 6 opposite McDonald's; the Station Store on the 4th floor of the Kannon-dori Building, 20 seconds from Ginza Line Exit 1; and the Sumida River Store on the 9th floor of the HK Asakusa Building. Hours 9:00–18:00, last dressing 17:00, return by 17:30, open all year. Online, the cheapest plan is ¥3,278 at the Station and Sumida River stores; the main store's One-Star kimono is ¥5,478, the standard yukata ¥3,630, the men's kimono ¥6,930. Walk-in prices run about ¥1,000–2,000 higher. Hair is free on some plans and from ¥550 on others. Options include luggage storage, a next-day return for ¥2,200, a rainy-day plan from ¥0 and children's kimono from ¥1,100. No pets in the store.
Verdict — kichi. Good prices and early opening; read which plan includes hair, and remember the men's plan costs twice wargo's.
Aiwafuku
Two stores. The main store is at 1-11-1 Hanakawado, two minutes from Ginza Line Exit 5 and next to the Tobu station's north gate; the Premium Kaminarimon store is on the 4th floor of Relink KAMINARIMON, 2-17-9 Kaminarimon, about a minute from the gate. Hours 9:00–18:00, closed on irregular days. Women's kimono start at ¥4,300 with hair included on every women's plan; students from ¥3,300, couples from ¥7,300 per pair, lace and Taisho-roman styles about ¥5,800–6,500. Luggage storage is free, staff speak English, and the main store says it keeps plenty of large sizes. The catch is the return rule: 16:30 if you arrive before noon, 17:30 if after. We couldn't find the company's legal name on its website.
Verdict — chukichi. Fair price with hair and free luggage, but the 16:30 return for morning renters cuts your day short.
Rikawafuku
One Asakusa store, on the 6th floor of HULIC & New Kaminarimon at 2-16-9 Kaminarimon, a minute from the gate; the chain also has stores in Kyoto, Kawagoe and Kamakura, and says it has served over 900,000 customers. Prices: ¥4,500 basic without hair, ¥6,500 with a hair set, couples ¥11,000, students ¥5,500, families of three or more ¥6,500 per person, groups ¥4,500 on weekdays and ¥5,000 at weekends. Prices go up on Sumida River fireworks day. Return by 17:30, and it publishes its late fee: ¥1,000 per person per 10 minutes. The upside is that you can extend to 22:00 for ¥2,000, which makes it the easiest option for night photos. Suitcase storage from ¥1,000. Men's sizes run M to 3L, up to 190 cm, with shoes to 29 cm.
Verdict — shokichi. Pricier once you add hair; worth it mainly for the evening extension.
YAE
One store, on the 3rd floor of the Nakaden Building, 1-2-6 Hanakawado, 30 seconds from Ginza Line Exit 5 and about two minutes from Kaminarimon. Open 9:30–17:30, no regular holidays. It is the most expensive standard plan here, at ¥6,900 for women and ¥6,600 for men, but every women's plan includes professional hair styling. Retro kimono and "Princess" yukata are ¥8,900, couples ¥13,000 per pair, kids ¥5,900; it also dresses formal furisode (¥30,000–48,000) and hakama (¥20,000). Return by 17:30; next-day return means back by 15:00 or sent by post at your cost. Suitcases and strollers are stored for ¥500 each, and plus sizes are available.
Verdict — kichi. The least fiddly choice: one price, hair included, near the station. You pay a little more for it.
Kimono Miyabi
Three stores: the Main Store at 3-30-2 Asakusa, about 8 minutes from Ginza Line Exit 1 (the furthest from the station of any shop here); the Asakusa Station store right outside Ginza Line Exit 4; and the Premium store on the 8th floor of the SMBC Asakusa Branch building, about 20 seconds from Kaminarimon. The return deadline is 17:00 the same day, the earliest of these six, and late returns are charged. We couldn't read full plan prices on the shop's site; the one published deal is a child's kimono for ¥3,500 when both parents rent. Miyabi sells heavily through Klook, where it has a very large number of reviews; the live score is in the booking box above.
Verdict — chukichi. Popular and conveniently placed, but the 17:00 return is the tightest in Asakusa and prices are hard to compare from the website.
Which one for you
- Most time in kimono: wargo (18:00), or Rikawafuku with the extension to 22:00.
- Cheapest with hair: wargo booked online.
- Nothing to think about: YAE.
- Tall, or men: wargo, which publishes the widest sizes.
- Early start: VASARA or Aiwafuku, both open at 9:00.

Booking direct or through a platform
Booking direct gets the online discount but the strictest cancellation (wargo: 100% from the day before).
